Social Security Administration has continued its annual Mother’s Daytradition of listing the top most popular boy and girl baby names of 2007.Emily has again topped the number one position for the 12th straight year ina row for girls and Jacob taking the top position for boys for the past 9years.
Many experts believe that top names may have something to do with them appealingto multiple ethnic or religious groups and having no widespread negativeconnotations. For example, Emily (meaning: to strive or excel or rival) hasmany literary bonds, including the famous author/poet Emily Dickinson, whichconjures the image of a woman who is beautiful, strong and smart.
Spiritual and philosophical name were very popular for girl names in 2007:Destiny (#41), Trinity (#72), Serenity (#126), Harmony (#315) and Miracle (#461).One rising name among the list is Nevaeh (“heaven” spelledbackwards). Nevaeh ranked in previously at #43 but this year rose up the ranksto #31. Boy name have continually shied away from the spiritual and philosophicalconcepts seen in girl names. Boy nameshave traditionally been tied to biblical references. Topping the list amongboys, besides Jacob, Caleb, Joshua, Mathew, Michael and Noah.
